Re-imagining Newhaven Projects In Delivery
The Re-imagining Newhaven Programme is a consolidation of three capital grant funding streams: Future High Streets Fund, Town Deal and Levelling Up Fund (Round 1).
The programme consists of 12 projects, 5 of which are complete. The following projects are currently being delivered:
Wayfinding and Public Realm Improvements
"Wayfinding isn't just about signs. It's about how people experience a place or a journey."
Newhaven is an industrial town with a centre heavily dominated by the ring road and vehicle traffic, but there is so much more to the town that is already waiting to be discovered or brought back to life.
Newhaven's Wayfinding and Public Realm Improvement Scheme is transforming prioritised areas of the tired and cluttered public realm.
The scheme will help provide more restorative environments which give a feeling of ease and exploration, moments of 'soft fascination' and a sense of place.
Achieved to date
- New information Boards were installed in 5 locations around Newhaven in July 2023.
- Soft landscaping at gateways to the Town Centre has been completed.
- Street cleaning equipment purchased for the Town Centre.
- Look Again Supergraphics - mural designs and installations completed in May 2024.
Works to complete by March 2027
- Improved wayfinding to and from the Ferry Port, Newhaven's nature reserves, and other key attractions.
- Two major public realm projects:
- Transport Interchange & Railway Quay pedestrian access
- Town Centre Streetscape Improvements.
Fish Landing Stage
Delivering a new 50m fish jetty on West Quay to accommodate 8 small vessels. This includes the demolition of the existing dilapidated stages and construction of a new steel jetty, access walkway and pontoon system. The project is due to be finished in April 2026.
Fish Processing Plant
A processing plant on Avis Way Industrial Estate has been established to support the fishing industry to enable fish landed in Newhaven to be processed, stored and distributed from the site.
The processing plant is being leased to the Newhaven Fishing Community Interest Company (CIC). This allows members of the CIC to make use of the facility and optimise their catch.
Fort Road Recreation Ground
This project will see the refurbishment of Shakespeare Hall and the Cricket Pavilion. There will also be new facilities, including a café, play area and outdoor fitness trail. The park will also be re-landscaped and connectivity to the Nature Reserve will be improved. For more information visit Fort Road website.
Newhaven Fort
Multiple projects to restore and enhance Newhaven Fort, which is a Scheduled Monument, so that it becomes a community asset and a key part of Newhaven's future as a popular visitor destination. Following major works, the Fort re-opened to visitors in February half term 2025. Minor works are now being carried out until March 2026. For more information visit Newhaven Fort.
Newhaven Square
The investment aims to transform empty underutilised properties in the heart of the town, which in turn will increase footfall, dwell time and spend, to create a thriving and sustainable town centre.
The projects in Newhaven Square will deliver:
- Creative co-working spaces, small studios, meeting spaces.
- The relocation of two local GP surgeries, one pharmacy as well as a new primary care network. This will provide new additional health services for local people.
- Enhanced leisure offer.
- Refurbished Car Park.
