Newhaven Square Health and Wellbeing Hub
Lewes District Council is working with partners to transform Newhaven Square by providing a new Health and Wellbeing Hub.

Quayside Medical Practice: The former Co-op building (10 Newhaven Square) is being refurbished and remodelled to provide a new premises for Quayside Medical Practice. Patients and GPs will benefit from more consultation and clinical rooms, improved staff facilities, new waiting areas and reception. As part of the development a Changing Places facility will also be provided with access from Newhaven Square.
Chapel Street Surgery: Refurbishment of the former Peacocks building (5 - 8 Newhaven Square) at both ground and first floor levels will provide new a premises for Chapel Street Surgery. Patients and GPs will also benefit from more consultation and clinical rooms, along with a new reception, waiting areas and improved staff facilities.
Pharmacy: To support the increased healthcare provision a new pharmacy will be opening alongside the GPs surgeries in 9 Newhaven Square (vacant unit).
New creative / co-working space: The scheme will deliver over 200 square meters of new space for creative organisations; this will be accessible from Chapel Street (opposite Seahaven Swim and Fitness).
Seahaven Swim & Fitness: A new entrance (shared with Quayside Medical Practice) will be formed in the former Co-op building and provide access to a new reception area, enlarged gym and two new studios. A new link between the former Co-op building and the existing Seahaven Swim and Fitness Centre will be constructed and internal remodelling works to the first floor of Seahaven Pool will be carried out which will provide new WCs, showers and an 'innerva' studio facility.

Latest update - Spring 2026
Work on the Newhaven Health Hub continues to move forward, with major milestones now taking shape across the site. Once complete, the development will provide two modern GP practices, a new pharmacy, improved Wave Active facilities and co‑working space for creative organisations. Below is the latest update on construction progress and the estimated timeline for opening different parts of the site.
Significant progress has been made in recent weeks. The link bridge connecting the new Wave Active area to the existing Seahaven building has now been installed. The full internal fit‑out for the Chapel Street Surgery is complete, and work is advancing well in the Quayside Medical Practice and Wave Active areas.

June 2025
- Removal of the temporary roof on the former Co-op unit (Quayside Surgery) has commenced
- New windows have been installed to former Peacocks (Chapel Street Surgery)
- The new gym roof has been formed
- Repointing has completed on the facade of former Peacocks (Chapel Street Surgery)
March 2025
- The construction of the new roof in the former Co-op Unit (Quayside Surgery) is well underway. In March 2025, the new flat roof steel work will commence.
- Drainage works are continuing in Quayside Surgery
- Demolition and drylining 1st fix are progressing in former Peacocks (Chapel Street Surgery)
- Designs installed to site hoarding following work with a local graphic designer
November 2024
- Buxton took possession of the site on 28th October 2024.
- The hoarding is currently being installed to the site boundary.
- Scaffolders will be on-site soon to begin building the scaffold within 10 Newhaven Square - Quayside Surgery (former Co-op) in preparation for the demolition to take place in the coming weeks.
- Lighting upgrades within Dacre Road Car Park are now complete, and the fourth floor re-opened on 20th September 2024 - this has seen a further 51 spaces become available.
- The 5th (top) level is linked to the wider development works to the former co-op building and will remain closed for use by Buxton
