Clearing roads
East Sussex County Council and the Highways Agency are jointly responsible for clearing snow and ice from the roads.
Clearing paths
We encourage residents to spread the salt from the salt bins on pavements to prevent icing. Residents can clear snow from the pavement or any public space and it is unlikely that you will be sued or held legally responsible for any injuries on the path if you have cleared it carefully.

There are salt bins in many of our car parks and cemeteries and our staff will use these to keep our services open. Our street cleaning teams will help clear town centre precincts of snow and spread salt where needed.
Advice for housing tenants
We will use the salt from the salt bins on housing estates to clear communal pathways at our sheltered housing schemes whenever applicable. Scheme managers will contact sheltered housing tenants to check on their wellbeing.
We will also aim to clear footpaths in hilly and difficult to reach areas of our estates.
Public transport
Extreme weather conditions can also affect public transport. We advise you to check before attempting to make a journey.
Schools and colleges
East Sussex County Council has an automated system of informing of school closures. Local colleges update their websites with their opening status.
Work and health
The severe weather may prevent you from getting to work. Know your rights as an employee and what is reasonably expected of you.
