Investment boost for Lewes district as Cabinet approves bridge and infrastructure works

Cabinet councillors today March 19) approved an in principle commitment of £558,000 to support the creation of a new pedestrian and cycle bridge over the River Ouse, providing a safe, all weather walking and cycling link between Lewes and Hamsey.

This is contingent on planning permission and the South Downs National Park Authority and Wealden District Council match‑funding Lewes District Council's financial commitment to the project.

The council funding would be awarded through the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) - a planning charge that enables local authorities to invest in the infrastructure needed to support growth and better quality of life for residents

The bridge would offer a greener, healthier alternative to travelling on busy local roads and create an attractive route into the South Downs National Park.

Councillor Laurence O'Connor, Cabinet Member for Planning and Infrastructure, said: "Delivering this link between Lewes and Hamsey has been a long‑held ambition, and I'm delighted we're now able to take it forward. A dedicated walking and cycling route will give people a safer, more enjoyable way to travel between the two communities while opening up better access to the countryside. It marks a significant step in our wider work to expand sustainable transport options across the district."

Alongside this, Cabinet councillors also approved more than £386,000 in the latest round of CIL funding to improve road safety for residents, enhance sustainable travel routes and upgrade key local facilities.

The approved projects are:

  • A package of enhancements to walking, cycling and bus infrastructure along the C7 corridor including new and improved crossing points, better‑designed bus stop areas and upgraded footways connecting villages including Kingston and Rodmell.
  • Newhaven Port Facility upgrades to strengthen operational safety and reliability.
  • Essential refurbishment work at Lewes Fire Station to ensure the building is safe and fit for purpose.

Councillor O'Connor added: "This investment will make a real difference to the places where people live, work and travel every day. The projects deliver strong community benefits, improved connectivity and better public safety. I'm delighted we've been able to approve such meaningful improvements for Lewes district."
