Hummingbirds in 'wonderful' voice at Eastbourne Crematorium
A new community singing group is soaring in popularity since launching at Eastbourne Crematorium. The Hummingbirds, a free, open to all choir created by local Celebrant Emma Sewell Hunter, has quickly become a vibrant weekly gathering for people of all ages and backgrounds, not just those experiencing loss.

Emma said:
"Through my work as a celebrant, I meet so many people navigating grief, loneliness, the pressures of everyday life or simply wanting to feel happier.
"Years ago, a choir helped me through a difficult time, and when I couldn't afford the fees, others quietly paid for me. Starting a free group was my way of passing that kindness on. When I shared the idea with the team at Eastbourne Crematorium, they generously offered their beautiful chapel - I couldn't have started this without their support."
While some members join after bereavement, many come simply for companionship, confidence, fun or a moment of 'me time'.
Members Julie Trowsdale, Donna Cutler and Karen Roberts shared why they became 'Hummingbirds':
Julie: "I joined because I love singing and wanted a choir that was fun, supportive and free in these financially difficult times."
Donna: "It's a joyous, non‑judgmental place where you can sing, boogie and feel safe and loved. I look forward to it every week."
Karen: "It lifts my soul and gives me a place to be 'me'. I jumped at the chance to sing informally just for the joy of it."
Emma added:
"The crematorium connects so many of us to people we love. It's the heartbeat of our community, where love shines brightly even on the darkest days. It shouldn't only be a place that remembers love, but one that celebrates life. Hummingbirds symbolise joy, resilience and hope, exactly what fills our sessions each week."
Cllr Candy Vaughan, Cabinet Member for Community and Accessibility at Eastbourne Borough Council, said:
"The Hummingbirds is a wonderful example of community spirit at its best. Emma has created something truly special, and we're delighted to host the group at the crematorium. It's heartening to see the chapel used not only as a place of remembrance, but as a place where people come together, find joy and support one another."
Eastbourne Crematorium also hosts a growing Grief Café, further strengthening its role as a hub for connection, reflection and wellbeing.
