Councillor Margaret Bannister said: "Having lived in Eastbourne nearly all my life I was delighted to have been selected to become Mayor, in May, for this municipal year.  Eastbourne is such a lovely town to represent, with great locations to enjoy and events to be proud of.

"Airbourne and international tennis attract visitors from around the world with the theatres drawing audiences from around the region. The seafront and South Downs are ideal places to spend time while enjoying the natural environment we are lucky to have on our doorsteps.

"Since becoming Mayor, I have become particularly aware of the rich tapestry of performing arts we have available in the town. The number of orchestras, bands, choirs and dance groups is amazing, and I have been privileged to attend so many of their performances.  The inclusivity of these groups has shown me that there is something for everyone of any age or ability to join and take part in.

"A big thank you to our voluntary groups, again many of which I have met.  The support they provide to the residents of Eastbourne should not be underestimated.  The time and effort that volunteers put into their work is wonderful and helps so many that are struggling.  Indeed, there are many volunteers kindly providing a meal and company on Christmas Day for those who are alone on this special day.

"I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a very happy, healthy and peaceful New Year."
