The Regulator of Social Housing, a government body that oversees standards and drives improvement, awarded Lewes a C2 rating for its commitment to delivering quality housing services and its proactive approach to improvement. Ratings range from C1, the highest award, to C4, which signals serious failings. A C2 places Lewes District Council among the top third of local authorities in England.

Councillor Mark Slater, Cabinet Member for Tenants and Housing Need, said: "This very positive inspection result is a clear endorsement of the hard work and dedication of our housing teams. The direction of travel is very exciting, and we are determined to work closely with our tenant´s association to achieve a C1 in future."

During the Cabinet meeting today (December 11), councillors noted that tenant satisfaction with repairs, home safety and complaints handling now exceeds national benchmarks.

The regulator also praised the council's focus on preventing homelessness, which has reduced demand for temporary accommodation and associated costs.

Inspectors also endorsed a plan for further service improvements and a wider housing strategy developed in partnership with other East Sussex authorities.

Councillor Slater added: "The encouraging feedback from the regulator, allied with our improvement plans and tenant-led approach, shows that we are on the right path to building stronger, more resilient housing services for the future."
