Eastbourne Borough Council's Cabinet has approved a new seafront strategy that offers a long-term plan to create a vibrant, safe, inclusive and sustainable seafront that reflects the values and aspirations of the community.

Developed following extensive consultation with over 2,000 residents, businesses, and visitors, the strategy identifies five key themes: Heritage, Culture, Tourism, Health and Leisure, and Safety and Inclusivity.

The strategy proposes a phased approach to delivery, introducing distinct zones of activity across the seafront to improve accessibility, enhance public spaces, and unlock new economic opportunities. It will also guide future investment, contribute to coastal defence planning, and support Eastbourne's ambition to be a year-round destination.

Councillor Jenny Williams, Cabinet Member for Tourism and Place, said: "This strategy is a once in a generation opportunity to shape Eastbourne's seafront for the future.

"Most importantly of all, it is born from the voices of our residents and businesses and sets out a clear vision for a seafront that is welcoming, inclusive and full of life all year round."

Significantly, the strategy will be overseen by a new Seafront Executive Board bringing together councillors, community representatives, local businesses, and arts and culture organisations to ensure delivery remains transparent, collaborative, and aligned with Eastbourne's long-term ambitions.

The council is also establishing a Bandstand Taskforce to lead restoration works, a funding strategy and co-ordinate with the Environment Agency on coastal resilience.

Councillor Stephen Holt, Leader of Eastbourne Borough Council, said: "Eastbourne seafront is part of our DNA and reflected in the ambition within the strategy.

"We are aiming high by creating a strong framework for regeneration, investment, and community-led development.

"And by activating distinct zones and working with partners, we can deliver high-quality outcomes that enhance Eastbourne's reputation as a destination town and improve the experience for everyone who lives, works, or visits here."

Councillors also thanked the Eastbourne Neighbourhood Board, whose £5,000 contribution supported wider community engagement during the consultation process.
