Following the completion of extensive repair work, Westgate Car Park in Lewes has today been fully reopened, earlier than scheduled.

The car park was closed due to shifting of the historic flint 'Town Wall' at Westgate Street in 2023. Emergency shoring-up was required and further investigation showed additional risks of the wall collapsing at various points.

Sections of the car park were reopened in the summer and as of Tuesday 22 October 2024, the car park has been reopened in full.

Councillor Nick Kortalla-Bird, Castle Ward, said:

"The reopening of Westgate Car Park is cause for celebration, both for residents and businesses.

"The timing is particularly welcome as Westgate Street forms part of the Lewes Borough Bonfire Society procession route. It also means local businesses will benefit from a full complement of parking spaces throughout the Christmas shopping period."

Councillor Wendy Maples, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood Well-Being, said:

"I would like to thank the highly skilled professionals who carried out this specialist work to ensure the safety of local people while protecting the aesthetic of our beautiful Town Wall."
