The community infrastructure levy (CIL) is a charge local authorities can make on new developments to help deliver infrastructure projects in their area. It can be used to help pay for a wide range of initiatives, including support for sports clubs, schools and medical facilities, open spaces and flood defences.

Eastbourne Borough Council now has £150,000 in a Neighbourhood CIL pot that local organisations will be able to apply for later this year.

Councillor Peter Diplock, Cabinet Member for Planning, said: "I know there are countless charities, sports clubs, youth groups and schools across Eastbourne with a project in mind that could potentially benefit from CIL funding.

"We have a number of measures to put into place before we can start making funding awards, but as soon as everything is confirmed we will share all the information needed to make an application."

The council has collected £1,004,245.02 of CIL money so far, which the regulations require to be shared between different pots.  80% of CIL money is for a County Pot for strategic infrastructure given to East Sussex County Council, 15% goes into a Neighbourhood Fund administered by Eastbourne Borough Council for small local projects and improvements, and 5% covers administrative costs.

Councillor Diplock added: "At a time when traditional funding streams are under more pressure than ever, I'm absolutely delighted that we can make over £150,000 available to local groups."
