Pre-application Advice for Licensing Act 2003
You need a premises licence if you want to sell alcohol or offer entertainment from a particular venue.
Licensable activities include:
- selling alcohol
- serving hot food and drinks between 23:00 and 05:00
- You'll also need a licence if you provide the following types of entertainment:
- plays
- films
- indoor sporting event
- boxing or wrestling (indoor or outdoor)
- live music
- recorded music
- performance of dance

Applications
Apply for a new premises licence
Apply for a full variation of a premises licence
Apply for a minor variation of premises licence
Apply to vary a premises licence to specify an individual as designated premises supervisor
Apply for a transfer of premises licence
You can be fined up to £1,000 for failing to produce your licence on request.
If you carry out any licensable activities at your premises without a premises licence, you can be fined, sent to prison for up to 6 months, or both.
