Scrap metal licence

If you are a scrap metal dealer you need to hold an in-date site or mobile collector's licence. You are not able to hold the two different types of licence within one council area.

What is a site licence?

This is required by an operator who has a site (or sites) within a council area. It allows the operator to collect scrap from any local authority area in England and Wales.

What is a collector's licence?

This is required by anyone collecting scrap in a council area that does not hold a site licence. The licence applies to one council area only.  Where collections take place in other areas a separate licence is needed from the relevant council.

You can apply for either licence below:

Scrap metal licences in the Lewes district

Apply Online

We work in partnership with Gov.uk to issue all of our licences online.  You will be required to log-in to Gov.uk to apply for a licence in the Lewes district.

In addition to listing all licences required, the site also details the regulations your business should meet as well as providing further help and guidance.

Copies of photographs and basic disclosure should be uploaded with your application document.  However, there may be an occasion when we need to contact the applicant to supply an original passport sized photograph.

Fees

  • Site Licence: £375 (renewal and a new licence application)
  • Collector: £255 (renewal and a new licence application)
  • Variation: £75.

Licences are renewable every 3 years. To assist current licence holders a reminder letter and renewal form will be sent prior to that date.

Application process

Once we receive your completed application, together with any photographs, disclosure documents and fee, we will process it. The process requires us to consult with other Local Authorities who may have an interest, the Police, and to notify both the Environment Agency and East Sussex County Council.
