Private water supplies
A private water supply is one that is not provided by a local water company (either South East Water or Southern Water).
Private water supplies are normally from a borehole, a well or a spring. All supplies must be registered with us.
Some supplies serve individual properties but many supply water to more than one property and in some cases a large number of properties and businesses may be supplied by a large supply network.
We have a duty complete a risk assessment of all private water supplies in the area that provide water to two or more properties. We monitor supplies to ensure the water provided is wholesome. Monitoring depends on the size of the supply. We will monitor larger supplies and those that provide water for a commercial activity more frequently than smaller supplies. The owners and consumers of supplies that only serve single properties can also request a risk assessment and monitoring.
More information on private water supplies can be found on the Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI) website.
