Private water supplies
A private water supply is one that is not provided by a local water company, such as Southern Water.
Private water supplies are normally from a borehole, a well or a spring. All supplies must be registered with us. For more information, residential users can email [email protected]. Commercial users should email [email protected].
Some supplies serve individual properties but many supply water to more than one property and, in some cases, a large number of properties and businesses may be supplied by a large supply network.
We have a duty to complete a risk assessment of all private water supplies in the area that provide water to two or more properties. We monitor supplies to ensure the water provided is wholesome. Monitoring depends on the size of the supply. We will monitor larger supplies and those that provide water for a commercial activity more frequently than smaller supplies. The owners and consumers of supplies that only serve single properties can also request a risk assessment and monitoring.
More information on private water supplies can be found on the Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI) website.
