Assets of Community Value

• Accepted nominations are placed on a list, maintained by Lewes District Council and Eastbourne Borough Council
• If a property or land is on the list as an Asset of Community Value, this is taken in to account when planning decisions are made relating to it
• If an owner decides to sell a property or land on the list, the community group that nominated the asset is informed. Time is given for the group to raise money to place a bid, known as Community Right to Bid
• The right to bid does not guarantee that any offer from a community group, to buy an Asset of Community Value, is accepted by the owner

What type of property or land can be listed as an Asset of Community Value?

To qualify, the property or land must have a current or recent use which can be shown to further the social wellbeing or social interest of the community. Social interest can be:

• cultural
• recreational
• sporting interest

Examples include village shops, pubs, community centres, allotments and libraries.

A residential property can't be included as an Asset of Community Value.

If a community organisation nominate a property or land for inclusion as an Asset of Community Value they will be asked to demonstrate how its main use can continue to meet its social objectives in the future.  

To be listed as an Asset of Community Value the property or land needs to meet certain legal criteria.
