Eastbourne Climate Emergency Strategy

Climate adaption

The Environment Agency in partnership with Eastbourne Borough Council are developing a new, £100+ million large coastal flood and erosion risk management project for Pevensey Bay to Eastbourne. This is one of the largest coastal flood risk projects in the country, as we plan to make Pevensey Bay to Eastbourne resilient to coastal flooding in response to the current climate emergency.

Eastbourne ECO Action Network

A recent survey conducted by Eastbourne Eco Action Network (EEAN), supported by the Blue Heart Community Fund, has revealed the growing challenges and opportunities faced by local growers in an evolving climate. With 60 respondents from across the Eastbourne area, the survey provides valuable insights into how changing weather patterns are affecting food production, soil health, and pest control—and how growers are adapting.

Key Findings:

  • Weather Changes: 78% of growers reported more intense rainfall, while over half (56%) have noticed stronger winds and increased drought periods.
  • Pest Problems: 51% of respondents have experienced increased damage from pests, linked to milder winters and shifting seasons.
  • Adaptation Strategies: Nearly 70% of growers have adopted conservation agriculture techniques like crop rotation and no-till farming.
  • Water Management: Many growers are investing in rainwater storage and drainage solutions to cope with extreme wet and dry periods.

What's Next?

The survey highlights a strong appetite for community collaboration, with many participants keen to share knowledge, trial new growing methods, and improve local food security. EEAN and Blue Heart will continue to support local growers through workshops, research, and funding opportunities.
