The Tenants of Lewes District (TOLD) are working with councillors and officers to help guide decisions around resident priorities, particularly in relation to the maintenance of properties. The latest measure agreed by the council in conjunction with advice from TOLD, will see £300,000 earmarked for the prevention of damp and mould.

Councillor Mark Slater, Cabinet Member for Tenants and those in housing need, said:

"Our discussions with TOLD about improving the housing stock have been very constructive.

"We are making exceptional progress together and the £300,000 now agreed will make a real difference to tackling incidents of damp and mould.

"Addressing any issues requiring repair and remediation have always been a key priority for us, but the role of TOLD is certainly adding valuable and timely insight to the process."

The government is introducing Awaab's Law which places new requirements on social landlords to address issues such as mould within specified timeframes.  The law is named after Awaab Ishak who tragically died due to prolonged exposure to mould.

Councillor Slater added:

"It is incredibly sad that it took the death of a two-year old boy to motivate the government to change the law and force some landlords to carry out repairs that should have always received a fast and comprehensive response.

"I would like to thank TOLD for their continued contribution to social housing management in the district and look forward to our partnership going from strength to strength."
