Extensive Urban Surveys
The Sussex Extensive Urban Survey (Sussex EUS) is a study of 41 towns undertaken by an independent consultant, funded by English Heritage. It is part of a national survey programme to assess the smaller historic towns of England on a county-by-county basis.
These surveys assess the archaeological, historical, and historic urban character of a location. Surveys have been carried out for the following areas:
- Ditchling
- Eastbourne
- Lewes
- Newhaven
- Peacehaven
- Seaford
The aim of the Sussex EUS is to provide guidance and advice to aid the understanding, protection and management of the historic qualities of some of the most significant towns in Sussex.
The aim of the project is to:
- provide archaeological and historic environment research and management
- inform plans and local policy
- underpin urban historic land and buildings management and interpretation
- encourage the integration of urban historic characterisation into the wider process of protecting and enhancing urban character.
The Historic Character Assessment Report for each settlement can be found below. You can use the options to filter by area, or use the search box to find what you're looking for.
