The Tree of Reflection

A new memorial has been installed in Hampden Park as a place where people can reflect on personal experiences during the pandemic.

The Tree of Reflection is located in Elm Grove Park (at the rear of Park Practice, Broadwater Way, Eastbourne, BN22 9PQ) set amongst an avenue of Sukura Cherry Trees donated by the Sakura Cherry Tree Project.

Councillor Murray was charged with organising the project by Councillor Steve Wallis when he was Mayor of Eastbourne. The memorial was designed by Louise Neter.

Councillor Murray said: "This is a wonderful sculpture that provides a space for people to remember loved ones they have lost through the terribly difficult times brought about by Covid and to recall the great support given by people locally.

"Many thanks to all those who contributed to making The Tree of Reflection a reality."

A crowd of more than 70 people gathered for a ceremony to commend the new memorial on Saturday, June 18.

The ceremony was hosted by the Deputy Lieutenant, Mrs Deborah Bedford and the Mayor of Eastbourne, Councillor Pat Rodohan, and included speeches by Councillor Murray; Louise Neter; Caroline Ansell, the MP for Eastbourne and Willingdon; Councillor David Tutt, Leader of Eastbourne Borough Council; and Father Danny Pegg, associate vicar of Hampden Park and Willingdon.
