Emergency planning
The first response to major incidents is usually by the emergency services; police, fire, ambulance, coastguard. They will assess the situation and decide whether to alert other agencies, which is where we may be called on to help.
Eastbourne Borough Council and Lewes District Council have a detailed Emergency Plan to follow should a major incident occur within our district. It fully describes our role, the actions we would take and how we would work with other agencies and organisations to resolve problems. Arrangements are kept under regular review and are the subject of regular training and exercising to test their effectiveness.
We are not a 24/7 organisation like the emergency services, but will support them to help return life to normal as soon as possible. As far as possible we will keep our everyday council services running despite diversion of staff and other resources to handling of the incident.
We are a member of the Sussex Resilience Forum that is a partnership of emergency responders in Sussex that leads emergency planning in Sussex.
